Terry Reckord moved with his young mother and sister in 1952, to live in a waterfront house that his grandmother had built on Indianola beach in 1950. He grew up near the east end of Miller Bay, enjoying boating and exploring the tidelands, beaches and forests around the bay and western Indianola. A favorite place to play with his boyhood pals was the long beach and tidelands of the Indianola Sandspit. Terry tells of childhood adventures and independence, when he would take his small boat over to Liberty Bay. He added that he would know it was time to go home for dinner after a day on the water, when he saw his grandmother waving a dishtowel on shore! Those must have been idyllic times in and around Miller Bay!

After military service and a tour of duty in Vietnam, Terry returned home, very surprised to find the ‘Spit’ dredged, filled and developing into private homesites, the community now known as Indian Bay.  He attended the University of Washington and lived in Seattle for about 15 years. All the while, returning “home” to Indianola and Miller Bay, almost weekly, with his children to visit family and enjoy all that this special place has to offer.

Terry finally moved back in 1986. He and wife Connie (current FOMB Board member) lived in Indianola for many years before building their current home on the west side of Miller Bay, where they have resided since 2012. “We began to hear about Friends of Miller Bay from our new neighbors, shortly after moving into our home here,” Terry said.  “Our professional careers are both centered around planning and public design, and we were intrigued by the notion that we could build upon and contribute to such worthy efforts to preserve and enhance the Bay,” he explained. Both Terry and Connie enjoy the great variety of activities and natural environment around the Bay. They especially appreciate witnessing the sometimes dramatic seasonal changes within the wildlife communities along the shoreline. Terry enjoys rowing quietly around the Bay, where he sees interesting wildlife activities happening on a daily basis. You might also see Connie out in her rowing scull, during the early morning hours on clear days.

The Reckord’s have an impressive resume. They were both active members of the Indianola Land Trust, and Connie served on the GPC Board when the land trusts first merged. Both Terry and Connie are members of the Green Building Council. Together, in their professional consulting careers, they authored: the Indianola Greenway Plan, the Kitsap County Greenway Plan, the Mosquito Fleet Trail Master Plan and the Kitsap County Bicycle Facilities Plan, among a variety of other northwest region public planning efforts focused primarily on recognizing and protecting valuable open spaces, enhancing access and minimizing developmental impacts. We appreciate their knowledge and expertise now that they are active members of Friends of Miller Bay! When asked if there was anything else that Terry would like to share with us, he said “We appreciate and applaud member efforts to protect and enhance the Bay and surroundings for future generations.” Thank you, Terry!
